He’s right

Alex is a bit obsessed with all things about Jesus and the Cross.  The only Bible story he wants to read is the crucifixion story and  when we pick up Cole from preschool, we must make our way in to the sanctuary where he stares at the cross.  Every day while we sit there quietly he whispers “Why Jesus die?”  I’ve tried answering this a hundred different ways, but every day the same question.

Today in the car on the way home from school, he asked again.  “Why Jesus die?”  Cole, trying to irritate Alex as only a big brother can, answered “Because Jesus loves big Easter trucks!”  Alex replies, “No Cole, Jesus loves ME!”

Words are tough

Our boys LOVE church, and all things associated.  The other night at Pathfinders, I was hanging out with Alex in the Sanctuary and he began asking about the cross.  I explained that Jesus died on the cross and that it was amazing that he did that for us so that we don’t have to die, but can go to heaven with him.  It was kind of a precious moment.

The next day we went to swimming lessons with Cole. Alex got bored, so we started wandering and came across another pool that had starting blocks lined up at one end.  He asked what they were and I explained.  “Those are starting blocks.  People dive off of them in to the pool.”  Then he got to see someone dive in.  He asked again and I explained again “people dive in the pool from the starting blocks.”

“Jesus!” he yelled.
“What?”
“Jesus swim!!”
“No Alex.  It’s DIVE, not DIE.  That’s not what Jesus did for us.”
But he continues to insist…”Jesus Swim!”

Hoping for better luck next time 🙂

It never ends…

As Cole continues to explore maps and freeways and all things geographical, he has become obsessed with where things begin and end.  Every drive in the car involves moving the navigational map around to see where a road begins and ends, where a park we pass begins and ends, etc.

Today in the car was no exception.

Cole:  Where does space end?
Dad:  It doesn’t end, it goes on forever.
Cole: Isn’t Heaven above space? Where does Heaven begin and end?
Dad: Maybe neither of them end
Cole: Oh, I get it.  Heaven is like earth.  It’s round. It never begins and never ends.

Family Vacation 2013

This year was an especially exciting year for the Windemuth family vacation as we all decided (including Ryan, Lai, Tyler and Ava) to all head out to the Oregon Coast, rent a house, and spend a long weekend soaking up sun (or rain), the beach and the view.

Coast View

It was spectacular!  The views were breathtaking and the weather, absolutely perfect, every day! (an oddity for the Oregon Coast).

If it weren’t for the kids I think we would have just sat out on the deck all day soaking up the views and sun.  However, the kids had other plans.  The boy’s LOVED playing with their cousins.  Unfortunately, they don’t see them nearly enough and when they do they love getting as much out of them as they can.  I think for Tyler and Ava’s part, they perhaps wonder what these kids want?

Our boy’s couldn’t get enough playing in the sand.  The only downside, the beach was down the hill and not exactly an easy walk for a 2-year-old.

So we ended up driving and unloading a menagerie of beachware.  We were prepared!  Perhaps over prepared – the wagon we loaded everything into, didn’t exactly work well in the sand, and pretty quickly 30 feet from the car looked like a decent enough place to plant ourselves.

The kids built sand castles and Alex tore them apart.  Alex and Cole both ate and threw more sand then they probably collected in their buckets.  We walked up and down the shore and froze in the cold Pacific water.

Tyler, Ryan, Cole and Todd went hiking around the rock and got a good look at a hole in the rock face and Tyler showed Cole exactly how to ‘pet’ a sea anemone.
The kids favorite time though, was hanging out with Papa and Grandma.

Unfortunately, 4 days isn’t very long when you’re eating as well as we were and having as much fun together and soon it was all over.  However, we liked it so much we’re likely headed back next year!
