As Cole gets bigger, he gets smarter.  I know that sounds quite obvious, but some days the leaps in imagination, in speech and in understanding are difficult to keep up with.

Cole is currently fascinated with his bum, and all things he can find there (see previous blog post regarding poop!).   We remind him constantly to keep his hands out of his pants, to which he responds with “No Bum” to show his understanding (if not his obeyance) of the directive.  Tonight in the bathtub, he was playing in the water as it was draining out, and eventually his hands headed south.  Without my saying anything, he piped up “No Bum,” to which I responded, “That’s right, no bum.”  He again put his hands to his bum and, as the bubbles drained out of the tub he said “PooPoo Bubbles!”  I know it’s wrong to laugh…but…

I really never could have envisioned the entirely crazy things you end up doing as a parent. Not only are some things crazy but sometimes really really gross. Today was just such a day when I was lucky enough to confront some awfully gross craziness.

Cole went down for his usual afternoon nap and things seemed to be going well. He has been getting a bit of a cold so we weren’t entirely sure that he would sleep real soundly but everything seemed pretty good. About an hour and a half into his nap he started tossing and turning (I was downstairs working on the computer and I could see and hear him on the monitor). It didn’t seem too strange just like he woke up a bit early. He usually sleeps about 2-2.5 hrs and will often stir early and then fall back asleep. Well today he didn’t seem to want to go back to sleep and kept saying … ‘Mamma’ but not in a strange way. This often happens.

Finally about 2 hrs into his nap I decided to go up and get him up as he clearly was not going back to sleep. Steph was sleeping and had really needed some catch-up sleep after being up with Alex every few hrs every night since he was born over a month ago. So I just quietly went into Cole’s room to get him up.

I walked in to the darkened room and immediately noticed something odd in the air. It stunk. My assumption was that he had just had a poop and needed a change. As I got nearer the bed something else seemed to be going on, however. There were noticeable dark spots on the sheets, and more oddly the walls, and then, to my horror I noticed his hands and face.

There was pooh everywhere.

After my initial horror I had the quick sense to march him quickly down to the bathroom it was only then that I noticed the extent of the pooh on his hands and there they are just sliding all over mine on the way down the hall. At that point, being a parent just takes over. I didn’t care. My poor boy had pooh everywhere and must feel terrible and worse he’d been trying to sleep in it. I felt terrible. There was no scolding or upset, he’s just learning and experimenting and I can’t be upset about that. I turned on the bath and picked him up and washed his hands off in mine and then plopped him in the bath. He had the best wash he’d ever had.

Cleaning poop off the wall, however, isn’t as easy as cleaning a 2-yr old. After a bit of diligent scrubbing it came off. However, his pillow was a total loss, so he got an upgrade. His Elmo and Baby Elmo, a casualty but hopefully a little washing machine love will restore them. Same with sheets and clothes.

After I was done and Steph woke up, I started feeling pretty proud of myself as I was telling her the crazy story. I had reacted in a really positive way, told Cole that he needed to not put his hands near his bum or this type of thing would happen again, and felt he really listened and now understood.

It’s now 2 hrs later – still was feeling pretty good and Cole just pulled out his hands from his pants. With pooh on them.

Awful, crazy, gross.

celebrate diaper pee pee-pee potty

February 23, 2011

Yeah! What a day! Cole and I had a good day today. But the big news came this evening. It’s been weeks since he has wanted to sit on his potty chair. Tonight he wanted to – and without his diaper! He sat there while we read stories for about 20 minutes, but nothing happened (despite my pushing the sippy cup!). Finally he got tired, wanted his diaper back on and we sat on the bed reading stories. About a half an hour later, he jumped off the bed, sat on the potty chair and was pulling at his diaper.
“Do you want your diaper off?”
“Uh huh”
“Ok”
We then began to read a story and within 30 seconds or so…the potty chair began to sing! This was huge! He had been very intentional about going to sit there, very intentional about wanting the diaper off. It was a FULL pee also, not just a drip. What a moment! We called Daddy in to celebrate with us!

hair cut pee-pee potty

January 19, 2011

What a big day! Cole woke up this morning early – and fussy. We did get ourselves together, go to Great Play, then on to a haircut. Thank goodness for the IPad which keeps him mostly entertained. After the cut, we did Story Time at the Library, then home for lunch. He’s getting so much better about playing on his own as well. After lunch he got down on the floor with his blocks and trains and played for 20 minutes or so. Yeah! Then upstairs for stories and nap.

And the exciting part. When we got in his room he wanted to take his diaper off and sit on his potty chair (like Max in his story book). So, off came the diaper. He then picked up his bead-sorter toy and was holding it on his lap playing with it – so cute! I quick ran downstairs for the phone (camera). When I got back up stairs, he had a strange look on his face and immediately stood up. He’d gone pee-pee in the potty! It was obvious he didn’t mean to and was feeling quite chagrined about it all. But YEAH! I cheered and hugged and high-fived! We called Daddy to celebrate the good news. (Meanwhile he is shaking his head “no, no, no.”). When I got off the phone, he lay on the ground and wanted a diaper put on. So – we’ll see. But it’s a first step!

It’s Sunday and Cole is getting so big. He’ll be two at the end of this month. So many new things!
– Tonight he will sleep in his big-boy bed (twin) for the first time instead of his crib! This will probably be a bigger deal for me (Mom) than for him – but it is a big moment. Last week he asked to nap in his big boy bed so we’ve begun the transition.
– He’s starting to talk/babble more. Although he has his first official speech therapy session later this week, he is really babbling. In the past few days, he says things that sound like “oh ya” in response to questions. Too funny! It’s so lovely to hear his little voice – music to my ears! He also says “ummm” to all sorts of things!
– Cole LOVES his Elmo. He was introduced to Elmo via a video of Elmo dancing, then received his first “toy” Elmo from Daddy. Now they are inseparable and he wants all things Elmo.

As we anticipate the arrival of baby brother (“Emilio”), we are also talking about that. I’m not sure how much he understands, but some days he really “listens” and processes what he hears. This will be such a big change for him and for us, it makes me a bit sad. These moments, this time we’ve had with just him have been so precious. I will miss them terribly. He has been my angel in so many ways and I’m so thankful to and for him.

UPDATE
Tonight was the big night. After singing the “bang bang song” we had bath and then in to Cole’s room for stories, prayer and hugs before sleeping in the big-boy bed for the first time. He was SO excited. Wouldn’t sit on my lap to read any stories – went right up and climbed in bed. Sat in bed and “acted out” his stories (patting his head, turning in circles, etc.) as he usually does on my lap or walking around. During one story he was straining at the edge of the bed to see the pictues – but there was no way he was getting out of bed…he wanted to be there! Prayers were also done with him sitting in bed and me in the rocking chair. One final hug, and that was that. He lay down with his Elmo and…so far so good!

I’m a bit nostalgic I suppose. It’s times like this that one becomes so aware of the passage of time, and appreciate all the “little moments” I’ve taken and savored. This journey with him is one of change and tonight is no exception. I never anticipated this moment being quite like this. I’m proud of him, but wary also of how fast time seems to be taking my angel.
